James Cook University, Verandah Walk

Award of Excellence for Urban Design

The Verandah Walk at James Cook University’s Townsville Campus was conceived to provide a covered link for students to and through it’s library hub precinct. Its designers have delivered much more than shade and shelter. The detailing and materiality literally reflect it’s natural surroundings. This approach demonstrates how a potentially simple brief can be transformed through a stakeholder design Charette process. Combined with creative thinking and design excellence the project team have delivered a multi-purpose initiative that enhances the brand of a place, wayfinding, gathering opportunities, night time safety and immersion in the natural beauty of the campus.

The Verandah Walk provides a sinuous and sculptural ribbon that draws students through the Universities forest towards it’s cultural heart.
