Armidale Memorial Library

Armidale, NSW

Wilson Architects were selected as the winning competition entry for the proposed Library for the Armidale Dumaresq City Council.

The proposed Library utilises the concept of a landscape for reading, socialising and interactive spaces within its considered planning. The building opens up to the public in a manner that embraces the streetscape with activities that move effortlessly through the foyer while maintaining strong visual connections into the building.

One of the dominant design strategies is the integration of the library to the existing urban fabric of Armidale. It is important to see the library as an evolution of the urban environment, extending and connecting with the heritage of the township, local culture and values. This building will instil pride in the history of Armidale, at the same time celebrating modern ideals of openness, flexibility and transparency.

A Library for the new age is no longer merely a container for information but a social hub: an occasion to meet and engage with people and information. Visitors to the Armidale War Memorial Library will see a building that treasures the past and looks forward to new possibilities.
